Discover: Valerie June

I can't remember where I first heard Valerie June, but I do remember that her voice is what caught my ear. It is very folky and cutting -- sharp; a welcome change from all the sugary-sweet, drowsy vocals you get from most female singers these days. Not to mention her hair is amazing.

Five For Friday: Foreign

"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." -- Billy Joel

I enjoy listening to music from other cultures in other languages. Since I can't understand the lyrics, my understanding of the songs comes completely from the feelings produced by the music and the expression in the vocals.
Enjoy this set of songs from around the world and have a good weekend!

Rediscover: U2

I remember hearing this song when I was a kid. I thought it was kind of weird back then, but I remember liking the bass line. I still like the bass line and the video is kind of weird, but that's Bono and the early 90's for ya.
Not that I really need to, but here's a link to U2's website.

Discover: The Family Crest

Just came across these guys. So much is going on with this music. I guess that's to be expected when you have a band of 7 people and feature hundreds of others. I love all the various instruments they use throughout the album and the arrangements and range of musical styles keep things interesting . I'm looking forward to learning more about this band.

Five For Friday: Anatomy

This week's Five For Friday features bands that have body parts in their name. Why? Why not? Interestingly, most of your body part band names have to do with the face/head.
Have a great weekend!

Rediscover: Damien Rice

I didn't intentionally mean to post about another Irish artist, but here it is. I haven't listened to him in a very long time. If you go to his website it says, "New website coming soon." Maybe this means new music coming soon too?

Five For Friday: Other Songs From One Hit Wonders

Just because you're only ever known for one song doesn't mean you didn't write a bunch of other ones that weren't really that good... Here's to all those other songs.

Rediscover: The Head and The Heart

It's been a while since I've listened to these guys. Heck, I still haven't listened to their most recent album they put out last year. I do hope it's as good their first album. This song is from their first album.

Discover: Phantogram

This week's discovery is Phantogram. I found them in the Spotify's "New Releases" and I've enjoyed listening to their most recent album, "Voices". I'll be checking out more of their albums soon. They kind of remind me of a less seductive, more up-tempo Portishead.

Rediscover: Wye Oak

The first time I heard this band, I thought it was a guy singing... You know, like Bon Iver's slightly less sleepy brother... Finally looked them up online and found out otherwise.
