Discover: Reptar

This week, it's time to discover some Georgia music. I've been holding onto Reptar for a little while because I couldn't find any footage that I liked. But they recently did a gig at Audiotree and I always enjoy their videos. Reptar is pretty fun and energetic music to listen to (not to mention, horns are usually a plus for me). The only thing I don't like is the lead singer's tongue seems to keep falling out of his mouth while he sings. I don't know why little things that are weird to me, but there you have it.

Discover: Bombadil

I've been sitting on this one for a while for a few reasons:
1. I haven't taken the time to check them out.
2. I'm not sure if they're hipsters or not.
3. I kind of like them, but I'm not yet blown away so I don't know what to say.
4. Bombadil is not one of my favorite Lord of The Rings characters.

I know that those are all shallow reasons for not listening to a band (except for reason 2.). Anyway, I like some of their songs and I'm glad to see that they are multi-instrumentalists. Don't let me cloud your judgement of them though.

Discover: Beaty Heart

I just came across Beaty Heart the other day. Pretty interesting tropical-influenced pop (trop-pop?) going on here. Hey, anyone that works a kalimba into their music is going to get my attention.

Sometimes you just need some Irish electronic pop music to make your day go better. Luck for you, Young Wonder fits that bill perfectly and is here to save the day!

Discover: Phoria

If I were to have a soundtrack for floating along freely, deep within the (preferably warm) saltwater like a jellyfish, Phoria would definitely be on that list.

Discover: Kofelgschroa

Don't ask how I came across these guys because I don't remember. That's the magic of stumbling around the internet. Secondly, don't ask me how to pronounce their name. I have no idea. Thirdly, don't ask me what they're saying. I have no idea. I don't speak German. Even though I don't know any of those things, I do know that I find foreign music very intriguing (and horns and accordions are pretty awesome).
Learn more about Kofelgschroa here (I just hope you can read German).

Discover: Roger Sellers

My first encounter with Roger Sellers was a video of him with a banjo, and between his nose and his upper lip sat a little mustache... I will go ahead and say that if you're a young guy with a mustache and I don't know you, I'm going to instantly judge your musical credibility (you can blame the hipsters for that). Yet as I continued to watch and listen, I was pleasantly surprised. Depending on when you catch him, he may be a one-man band armed with loops and keyboards and computers and such, or you may find him simply playing a piano... or, as stated before, playing a banjo with a full band. I'm not quite sure who Roger Sellers is yet, but I'm looking forward to discovering his music.

Discover: Ásgeir

What is it about Iceland that makes such good musicians? I don't know, but whatever it is, I'm glad. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Asgeir soon... Oh look; he just so happens to be having a 3 disc deluxe edition album coming out today (depending on where you live).

Discover: Woody Pines

I'm a little late on this weeks Discovery post, but here it is nonetheless. If you like old-timey/americana/railroad jazz, you'll probably like Woody Pines.

Discover: The Bots

FINALLY!!! I've been digging around the internet for the last couple of hours searching for something interesting and different and I've finally found it! Thank you, The Bots! These brothers are fantastic and I imagine if Jimi Hendrix had had kids it would probably be these guys. Check them out now!... really. Go. Now.

Discover: The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys

If you're ever in the mood for some old timey jazz, check out The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys. Preferably live in a small, crowded bar or out in the streets.

Discover: Foy Vance

I've recently come across the music of Foy Vance and I really like what I've heard so far. Reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen and David Gray, he is definitely one to check out.

Discover: Jose Gonzalez

I know I've heard of Jose Gonzalez before, but didn't pay much attention to him until I was listening to my Nick Drake station the other day. So good and relaxing. Perfect for the weather we're having now.

Discover: Patrick Watson

Patrick Watson plays good music... Especially for a gloomy and/or sleepy day. Not that it's boring, but it does have a good "I could sleep to this" feel about it. I'm looking forward to listening to his most recent album "Adventures In Your Own Backyard" start to finish soon.

Discover: Company of Thieves

I know I've heard of Company of Thieves before, but, sadly, it was just in passing and I never checked them out until now. My my my... Have I been missing out. Rocky jazzy floating through the ocean emotion. Not to mention they have a song called "Oscar Wilde" so that's an instant win in my books! Learn more about Company of Thieves here. (Sadly, they are currently disbanded, but the lead singer has something else going on.)

Discover: The Wytches

Apparently there is a sub-genre known as surf doom; and apparently The Wytches are part of that sub-genre. Looks like I'll be learning something new this week.

Discover: Gin Ga

So, these guys are pretty fun. I don't really know that much about them except I like what I've heard. Kind of 80's. Kind of Arcade Fire. Learn more about Gin Ga here.

Discover: Spirit Family Reunion

Have some folky tunes on this Labor Day! If I can say one thing about this band it's that they do like to dance around on (and off) stage! Learn more about Spirit Family Reunion here.

Discover: D.D Dumbo

Don't be fooled by the dumb(o) name, this guy is pretty great. I tend to be leery of people who perform by themselves, making loops on the fly to create all the music, but he does it quite well. His D.D Dumbo EP is an interesting listen. Check him out and learn more about him here.

Discover: The Revivalists

New Orleans turns out some freaking great music and The Revivalists are no exception. Funky rock 'n' roll with horns and pedal steel? I'll take it! Also, the lead singer looks like Keith Richards.
